Title: Working Intimacy: Working Relationships in a temporary institution
Year: 2014
Authors: Ms. Angela Eden Mr. David Sierra
Abstract:

This paper addresses the boundaries and affect in professional work relationships. These relationships need to be effective in order for the project, or team to succeed. They often have to build quickly, and transition across existing as well as new relationships. They can become significant in the life of the organisation and become very important between individuals and the group. As an example, on Group Relations events, the connection is defined by the temporary nature of the institution, and effects on the speed and intensity of the interactions. The experience of a closed and often emotional series of events alters the time and space boundaries. People develop a new way of relating that is both close, and attenuated in the same environment .

This paper addresses the influences on those relationships. E.g the degree of working intimacy that develops in GR events, and other professional relationships in project teams, within working organisations, in community groups , creative teams in Theatre and Film etc . We hypothesis that the intimacy holds both excitement and fear, and needs to be a conscious part of the work, the end of the work, and the move to new groupings. There are connections to theories. e.g. attachment and child development, loss, change and the defences against intimacy.
