Psychoanalysis and the Executive Role

Conference, Audio, Video or Powerpoint Presentation

Title: Psychoanalysis and the Executive Role
Year: 1996
Authors: Gould, L.

Primary Task - To provide a forum for discussing how those having intensive exposure (by virtue of training and/or experience) use psychoanalytic thinking and sensibility - consciously and unconsciously, directly and indirectly - in taking up their executive roles. This discussion will hopefully generate hypotheses about how our psychoanalytically informed training and/or psychotherapeutic work is internalized and translated into executive and management practice, and how it may be enhanced.

Structure and Roles - The panel will be conducted as a "role analysis in the round", utilizing a format similar to what has become something of a basic model - namely, having a presenter, and an interviewer that actively connects the presenter and the audience through dialogue, with the aim of developing hypotheses, and deepening the thinking about the presenter's role and experience in it. In this forum, the particular emphasis for exploring the executive role will be the effect of having "intensive exposure to psychoanalysis", and its impact.

Panel Chair: Larry Gould, City University of New York; and, the Organizational Development and Consultation Program, The William Alanson White Institute

Panelists: Susan Long, Swinburne University, Ed Shapiro, Austen Riggs Center, Robin Stevens, New York Transit Authority

Time Frame and Format:

The panel will be held on Friday, June 4th between 2:00-4:45 pm.

Each panelist will present for about 10-12 minutes, and will then be briefly interviewed. For the next twenty minutes or so, the interviewer will "work the relationship" between the presenter and the audience with the aim of developing hypotheses relevant to the inquiry. There will be two presentations about 35-40 minutes each, and then a short break, followed by the third presentation, and a plenary process review ( the last 20 minutes or so).
